Heathers: The Musical came at a time where, as a nation, we were experiencing the horrors of real-life school shootings. As a design team, we knew we had to handle the subject matter in this show carefully. The concept was that the world of the play stemmed from the grungy underbelly of society as seen in comix. Comix are the subversive cousins to what we all grew up reading in the Sunday paper. We wanted to highlight the satirical nature of the show with this comic book influence.
My goal with the lighting was to help emphasis the graphic, comic quality we were going for through the use of heavy saturation and a two-toned red and blue look that was reminiscent of old school 3D glasses. The characters were incredibly color-driven; Veronica embodied a blue world and Heather Chandler and all things insane lived in a red world. The punched up color and isolation for the locations were key factors in telling this story.
